Dapper Labs Partners with the NBA to Launch a Blockchain-Powered Basketball Game

Dapper Labs, a blockchain-focused company behind the world’s most successful and popular blockchain application CryptoKitties, is about to introduce first of its kind and top of the line game to basketball fans around the world.

NBA Top Shot, a new digital platform and game from Dapper labs, will allow basketball fans to trade and own exclusive digital NBA tokens or collectibles on blockchain.

Dapper Labs in association with National Basketball Association (NBA) and National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) announced the launch of NBA Top Shot, a digital gaming platform where fans can trade and own collectibles – some of the greatest moments in the history of NBA. Users will be able to watch these moments as collectibles and store or trade them on the blockchain platform. There will also be a complimentary basketball game that users can play and to develop the NBA fan community right from the blockchain.

“The NBA and its players are among the greatest heavyweights in global culture,” said Roham Gharegozlou, CEO of Dapper Labs.

“Dapper Labs is proud to work with the NBA and NBPA to create an unparalleled digital experience for sports fans. Through NBA Top Shot basketball fans can engage with their favorite players, teams, and each other in entirely new ways. We use the latest in blockchain technology to create assets and experiences that are guaranteed limited edition and authentic, not to mention portable and permanent in a way nothing digital has ever been before.”

The newly developed platform will consist of a player-to-player game and a social experience that resembles CryptoKitties, built around digital collectibles. Unlike other sports game where players are required to clear some levels to go up and build their squad, in NBA Hot Shot, the players will require to acquire some of the live in-game moments i.e. Kevin Durant 3-point shot, or Joel Embiid dunk, from various NBA seasons over the years. These popular moves will be used as virtual commodities or collectibles in the game which players can use to play against other players and participate in online championships and tournaments.

Josh Goodstadt, Executive VP of Licensing for THINK450, the commercial arm of the NBPA said, “NBA Top Shot is an entirely new way for fans to connect with their favorite athletes.”

NBA Hot Shot will be all set to bring compelling and engaging basketball experience to fans sometimes in FY 2020. This is yet another example how the field of sports once again leverages crypto and blockchain technology.
