Eat Just and Proterra Asia Partner to Launch a Subsidiary in Asia

When built, the factory will generate thousands of metric tons of protein, adding to existing protein facilities in North America and Germany.

San Francisco-based plant food manufacturer Eat Just has announced a partnership with a consortium led by Proterra Investment Partners Asia. Within the deal, Eat Just and Proterra Asia will build a subsidiary, called Eat Just Asia, in Singapore. The company will concentrate on creating a fully-integrated supply chain for Eat Just’s flagship product, vegan egg substitute JUST Egg.

According to the press release, Eat Just will invest $20 million in the project, while Proterra’s investment will total $100 million. Eat Just will share its proprietary protein separation technology, leadership, and innovative business model. Meanwhile, Proterra Asia will provide its on-the-ground experience across the continent.

The project has already received support from the Singapore Economic Development Board. When built, the factory will generate thousands of metric tons of protein, adding to existing protein facilities in North America and Germany. Besides, the subsidiary will create additional jobs and infrastructure in the region. The demand for protein in Asia is increasing, and its product will definitely gain traction there.

Eat Just CEO Josh Tetrick commented:

“This partnership will further accelerate our path to become one of the world’s largest producers of eggs in the next decade. Proterra’s experience across sourcing and manufacturing will be invaluable. Consumer demand, driven by health, food security and food safety, is creating an environment of extraordinary opportunity for this unique partnership.”

Damian Chan, VP of the Singapore Economic Development Board, stated:

“The partnership between Eat Just and Proterra is an important addition to Singapore’s agri-food ecosystem and will build new innovation and production capabilities within the sector here. This will allow us to better cater to the needs of the Asian markets, while creating exciting opportunities for Singapore.”

Apart from JUST Egg, the companies are also discussing expanding their collaboration with the commercial production of cultured meat.
