Report: There have been 13 million cryptojacking attempts this year says Kaspersky

Crypto asset security is of vital importance

According to reports coming from the cybersecurity firm known as Kaspersky, it has been found that most crypto attacks are carried out in Turkey, Africa and in the Middle East regions. The problem that these countries are having is crypto jacking, which is having malicious activities which involve the mining of cryptocurrencies through the gathering computer resources from unsuspecting users.

The hijacking of resources from a computer itself in order to mine cryptocurrencies is not completely outrageous. However, users are expected to get paid for their resources being utilized. This is also only available to do with non-dedicated mining hardware of a cryptocurrency that does not use a GPU

According to Kaspersky Lab, there was a Moscow-based multinational cybersecurity and anti-virus provider that offered some solutions. The Russian security firm revealed that the cyber attacks involving the mining of cryptocurrency have increased nearly fourfold in the Middle East and Africa alone. These kinds of attempt’s have pushed up the cryptojacking to about 13 million this year, which is up from 3.5 million in 2017.

Malware scripts can used in order to gain access to user’s PCs to mine cryptocurrencies. The script can run as a background process on a personal computer until noticed if that person is not informed. These malicious scripts can take up a lot of CPU power, resulting in a very slow PC, and in some cases may damage the device due to overloading the processor.

According to Fabio Assolini which is the senior security researcher at Kaspersky has also explained how digital currency mining attacks can be carried out silently, he mentioned that:

” The META region is becoming more appealing to cybercriminals, with financial and malicious cryptomining attacks talking center stage. Mining is silent and causes less impact than ransomware, making it less noticeable.”

The Kaspersky company denies misconduct allegations

Through a report from a representative, they have commented on the restrictions placed on the company. However regardless of whether the cybersecurity firms decide to persue any legal relief, the company will continue to focus on providing quality services to US-based customers. While improving performace to clients from around the world. The represtative also mentioned that Kaspersky has never engaged in any type of illegal conducts and that the company is in accordance with any appropriate rules and regulations.

In late November, the researchers at Kaspersky have found that usually unlicensed or pirated software can be used in order to install malware scripts for mining crypto. Monero is one of the most known to be used for this kind of attempt, this is because the algorithms that Monero (XMR) still uses with its CPU. Which continues until the Proof-of-work starts pushing more to a GPU based processing unit, as it uses both.

Cryptominers have been able to take ransomware’s and invade users and businesses’ with computers and devices that take advantage of privacy, in order to put cryptocurrency in the control of thieves. Kaspersky encourages crypto users and miners to stay safe and learn how to protect and recover funds.
