Ethereum Istanbul — Faster, But Still Not the World Computer

Vitalik Buterin has claimed that Ethereum will support 3,000 transactions per second after the upcoming Istanbul fork. Will this unleash a new wave of Ethereum creativity? Might we expect a surge in traffic on the Ethereum network? Could its increase influence the price of ETH? Ethereum is slow The conventional wisdom is that Ethereum is too slow. But for what purpose is it too slow? It seems to be sufficiently fast for financial services. But the mistake people are making in saying “Ethereum is slow” is misunderstanding what a great…

T-Minus 1,000 Blocks Until Ethereum’s Istanbul Hard Fork

As of press time, Ethereum has passed block #9068000, putting it within 1000 blocks of the scheduled Istanbul hard fork, which should take place at around 23:30 UTC. The much-anticipated shift to Istanbul will be the Ethereum network’s first hard fork since February’s Constantinople. Both are stages of a broader phase of ongoing development that began in 2017 called Metropolis.  What is changing? Cointelegraph has covered Ethereum’s ongoing developments extensively, as have the developers. Broadly speaking, Istanbul should be streamlining the network in accordance with Metropolis’s overall goals of scaling…

Ethereum Istanbul Hard Fork Release Date Confirmed By Core Developer

Team lead at the Ethereum (ETH) Foundation Péter Szilágyi has confirmed Dec. 4 as the expected date for the network’s forthcoming Istanbul hard fork. In two tweets posted on Nov. 7, Szilágyi indicated that Istanbul will commence at block 9069000. He provided Geth mainnet node operators with a link to a new maintenance release designed to begin the hard fork’s initialization.  Geth is the name given to one of the two most popular clients used to operate nodes on the Ethereum network — the other being Parity. Ethereum gets closer…

Aragon Expects Ethereum’s Istanbul Hard Fork to Break 680 Smart Contracts

The Ethereum network’s Istanbul hard fork is expected to break 680 smart contracts on the decentralized management platform Aragon. Jorge Izquierdo, CTO at Aragon One, said that the upcoming upgrade will result in the breaking of roughly 680 smart contracts, industry-focused media outlet Coindesk reported on Sept. 30.  Izquierdo explained that the impetus behind the update is to further ensure frictionless functioning of decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs) built on the Aragon platform and address affected smart contracts. Izquierdo added that DAOs will no longer be able to receive Ether (ETH)…

Early Arrival of Ethereum’s Istanbul Hard Fork Causes Testnet Split

Ethereum’s system-wide activation of the Istanbul hard fork has arrived two days early and caused a split of the Ropsten testnet. Huge miner pushing the non-forked chain On Sept. 30, the community manager of the Ethereum Foundation, Hudson Jameson, explained on Twitter that there are miners still relying on the old Ropsten testnet, while others are already mining on the new one. Cointelegraph previously reported that Jameson said that the testnet launch of the hard fork was scheduled to take place at the beginning of October. He added: “For anyone listening in who…

Ethereum Istanbul Imminent But ETH Price Still Plunging

A major network upgrade or hard fork is usually bullish for a crypto project. Ethereum has long been subject to indignation from its adversaries for its lack of scalability and network problems when under pressure. The first phases of a long awaited protocol upgrade are about to be rolled out but will they have any impact on ETH prices? Istanbul Imminent on Testnets The long awaited Istanbul network upgrade for Ethereum is due to be rolled out over the next three months. It has already faced delays and there may…

Ethereum Coders Approve 6 Changes for Upcoming Istanbul Hard Fork

Ethereum core developers finalized late Thursday a list of six different code changes to be activated for ethereum’s next system-wide upgrade, Istanbul. As agreed in prior meetings, Istanbul will be executed in two parts. The first, which will feature all six code changes, or ethereum improvement proposals (EIPs), is tentatively expected to execute on ethereum mainnet this October. The second, which is scheduled for mainnet activation sometime in the first quarter of next year, will feature EIPs requiring further testing and deliberation from core developers. Those include a proposed mining algorithm…
