A cryptocurrency company is planning to roll out mini-power plants to rural villages in Zambia in order to bring electricity to remote parts and mine for Bitcoin. The company has already proven that a similar model works after installing Bitcoin generating mines to at 6 different renewable energy plants in 3 different countries. The project shows the potential benefits of the controversial energy hungry system that powers Bitcoin. The BBC’s Joe Tidy went to a remote mine on the Zambezi river to see one project in action.
