Why would anyone build a Bitcoin mine near Russia’s border?
In this video I travel to Kotka in eastern Finland to investigate a Bitcoin mining operation located just a few miles from Russia.
But this isn’t a giant industrial facility like the ones in Texas. Nope, it’s an independent Bitcoin mine using mining containers to produce heat and energy for local industry.
Inside this mine, Bitcoin miners heat buildings, warm water, and help local businesses reduce energy costs. And they also mine bitcoin 😉
Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, energy security has become a major issue across Europe. And in places like Finland, Bitcoin mining is starting to play a surprising role in how energy is produced, managed, and used.
So I went to see it for myself.
What I found raises a bigger question:
Could Bitcoin mining become part of Europe’s energy infrastructure?
