Amazon to Launch NFT Initiative This Spring

A few sources stated that the initiative would likely be about getting Amazon customers to play crypto games and claim free NFTs in the process. And the platform will probably be run out of Amazon rather than Amazon Web Services (AWS).

E-commerce giant Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ: AMZN) is planning to launch an initiative that involves non-fungible tokens (NFTs). According to those familiar with the matter, the NFT initiative, known as “digital assets enterprise”, will allow Amazon to focus on blockchain-based gaming that rewards players with NFTs.

The NFT initiative is expected to launch as soon as this spring, in April.

Earlier, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said that he believed in NFT growth, and the company might start selling them. He added that Amazon would also stay open for cryptos.

Andy Jassy said:

“I expect that NFTs will continue to grow very significantly. We’re not probably close to adding crypto as a payment mechanism in our retail business, but I do believe over time that you’ll see crypto become bigger and—it’s possible that Amazon ingrates crypto payments.”

It seems that the time for the Amazon NFT platform has come.

One of the sources commented:

“We knew it was possible. But now it seems like it’s really happening. That’s going to affect the existing players in the space — if they execute and do this right and are smart about it.”

Another spokesperson familiar with the matter added:

“With the [number] of customers Amazon has, they could make a huge splash in the NFT marketplace.”

A few sources stated that the initiative would likely be about getting Amazon customers to play crypto games and claim free NFTs in the process. And the platform will probably be run out of Amazon rather than Amazon Web Services (AWS), a subsidiary of Amazon that provides an evolving cloud computing platform. But it is not yet clear who will be in charge of the initiative.

Amazon Exploring NFT Space

The first time Amazon showed interest in Web3 technologies was back in the spring of 2022 when the company opened blockchain-related job roles for the Amazon Web Services (AWS) team.

In December 2022, Amazon released a new documentary series “NFTMe” which introduces NFTs. The show features artists, collectors, and industry professionals across the world who share their experiences with NFTs and how the merger between art and technology has positively affected their daily lives. Produced by award-winning production house Tech Talk Media and directed by award-winning director Jonny Caplan, NFTMe has featured over 50 different guests in its first season. Among them are Peter Rafelson and Cheryl Douglas, Queen Diambi of Congo, Refik Anadol, Susaye Greene, and more. All of them have NFT experience, they speak on Web3 and NFTs, as well as explain how NFTs have positively impacted their lives.

From January 3, the series is available on Amazon Prime for members in the UK and the US, with plans to launch globally later this year.
