Most people have never heard of bauxite, yet they couldn’t live without the essential metal it eventually transforms into: aluminum.
No bauxite, no planes, cans, or electronics. The durable, yet light and corrosion-resistant metal has become the world’s second-most consumed metal, behind iron.
Given its great importance, it’s no wonder Rio Tinto, one of the world’s largest resource companies, produces and refines large quantities of it in Australia. And we were lucky enough to get the behind-the-scenes tour!
Located near Cape York, Australia’s most northern point, the Amrun operation produces millions of tonnes of bauxite annually.
