Meta to Launch Decentralized Social Network

The new text-based content app, codenamed P92, will be backed by ActivityPub – a decentralized social networking protocol.

Meta Platforms Inc (NASDAQ: META), the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has begun working on a unique decentralized social network. According to a Reuters report, the platform will be used to share text updates and has also been tipped to compete directly with billionaire Elon Musk‘s Twitter.

Meta Seeks to Ensure Ease of Access by Integrating with Instagram

The new text-based content app, codenamed P92, will be backed by ActivityPub – a decentralized social networking protocol. It might be worth mentioning that ActivityPub already powers Mastodon and a few other decentralized apps that currently compete with Twitter.

Unlike how Twitter and Facebook are controlled by a single authority, the likes of Mastodon are so decentralized that they are installed on several thousands of computer servers and run by volunteer administrators who form a community after joining their systems together.

Meanwhile, Meta will also be integrating its upcoming app – codename P92, with Instagram in a ‘fork’ approach. That is, users who have previously registered on Instagram may register and log in on the P92 using their Instagram credentials. This way, there is an automated population of such users’ P92 profiles with their account details including their name, username,  bio, profile picture, and so on.

More Rival Platforms Spring Up Against Twitter

As earlier reported by Coinspeaker, the number of Twitter users on the lookout for alternative platforms keeps growing by the day. And tech firms and startups are increasingly interested in taking advantage of this growing trend.

Over the past few months, several rival platforms such as Mastodon, Post.news, T2, and others have emerged. Some of them have launched while others continue their pre-launch efforts to attract this group of users.

As far as the P92 project is concerned, its current plan, for now, is only to enable users to broadcast posts to people on other servers. However, that also might be subject to change as time passes. Thus, users may eventually be allowed to follow and view the content of people on other servers.

According to reports, the initial version of the app will also have common shareable features such as username, user bio, verification badges, images, and video. It will also feature follow and like functionalities. But it remains unclear if the first version of the product will come with commenting and messaging features as well.
