So these two brothers were digging for silver in Mexico – but instead of finding ore, they found Earthโs strangest natural wonder.
You see, Juan and Pedro Sรกnchez were nearly a thousand feet underground in the Naica Mine in Mexico when their drill suddenly pierced an empty space which released a burst of scorching air so hot it burned their skin.
When they climbed inside, their lights revealed a chamber full of massive crystals.
There were massive white beams of selenite, longer than a city bus and weighing over 12 tons, which criss-crossed the chamber like glass pillars.
The cave reached 136 degrees Fahrenheit with 99 percent humidity – so deadly that even scientists in super-cooled suits could only last ten minutes.
Tests later showed these crystals had been growing for nearly half a million years, slowly formed by magma-heated water rich in minerals.
However when researchers drilled inside them, they found ancient microbes – which had been trapped and preserved for 50,000 years.
When mining stopped in 2015, the pumps that had emptied the chamber were turned off – and the cave quietly flooded again.
