SIX Swiss Exchange Sees 1.3% Turnover Gain in Aug after 2-Month Fall

SIX Swiss Exchange, Europe’s third-largest stock exchange and top post-trade service provider, has reversed the two-month decline its previously recorded in its total trading turnover.

The stock exchange’s turnover reached CHF 78.3 billion in August, which is a 1.3% month-over-month (MoM) gain from the CHF 77.2 billion it posted in July.

On the contrary, the total number of transactions made on the exchange declined 2.3% to 4,028,431 in August.

These figures are contained in SIX Swiss Exchange’s key trading figures for August 2022 published on Thursday.

In July, the exchange had recorded a two-month decline in its trading turnover, dropping -21% from June’s CHF 97.8 billion and –10.7% from May’s CHF 109.4 billion.

However, while SIX Swiss Exchange recorded MoM growth in its total trading turnover in August, on a year-to-date (YTD) basis, the turnover receded 0.8% when compared to the same period in 2021.

The exchange, which had seen a 12% year-over-year growth in net profit between January and June 2022, generated CHF 861.3 billion in total trading turnover during the first eight months of 2022.

SIX Swiss Exchange also reported that the total number of transactions made on its platform between January and August this year remained flat when compared to the same period last year.

A total of 42,557,270 transactions was recorded year-to-date.

“The highest turnover on a single trading day was recorded on 17 August, which saw securities worth a total volume of CHF 6.4 billion changing hands. The highest number of trades was recorded on 2 August, with 241,927,” the exchange noted.

Additionally, SIX Swiss Exchange returned a flat performance in its first half (H1) of year result when compared to H1 2021.

The top European exchange generated a total turnover of CHF 783.0 billion between January and June 2022.

Top Stock Performer

Meanwhile, the shares of Nestle, a Swiss multinational food and drink processing conglomerate, retained its number one spot as the stock with the highest trading turnover.

However, Finance Magnates‘ analysis shows that Nestle’s trading turnover slumped 10% to CHF 6.1 billion from CHF 6.8 billion in July.

Furthermore, Novartis AG, a Swiss-American multinational pharmaceutical corporation, also retained its position as the most- traded stock on the SIX Swiss Exchange.

However, unlike Nestle, the total number of Novartis’ stock trading transactions rose 11% to 250,501 transactions in August. The figure stood at 225,307 transactions in July.

How Did Crypto ETPs Perform in August?

In August, the trading turnover of products with cryptocurrencies as their underlying dropped -11% to CHF 89.9 million, deepening the 41% fall recorded last month.

“In total, 268 products were traded and 7,437 transactions concluded,” SIX Swiss Exchange said.

Furthermore, 21Shares Ethereum ETP (AETH), an exchange-traded product (ETP) on Ethereum, remained the best-performing cryptocurrency ETP on the SIX Swiss Exchange.

The total number of AETH-based transactions jumped 42% to CHF 21 million from July’s CHF 14.8 million.

Additionally, AETH saw the most number of transactions in the crypto ETP category in August, rising 3% to 1,606 trades.
