The mainnet Ignition launching next month will be a predatory launch of the official mainnet Liftoff for the Filecoin platform. The pre-Liftoff phase is more about getting users acquainted with the platform.
Filecoin, the decentralized storage network that raised millions-of-dollar via ICO in 2017, is now aiming to its mainnet launch next month. On Sunday, September 27, Filecoin briefed about its latest developments and launching its mainnet Ignition and Liftoff.
In the blog post, Filecoin mentions that in the initial phase, they would be going with mainnet Ignition before proceeding to the official Liftoff. As per the tentative plans, Filecoin will launch its Ignition mainnet on October 15. The blog post mentions:
“Launching a blockchain is an involved and lengthy process. Like many other networks (including Polkadot, NEAR, and others), Filecoin is taking a phased approach to launching mainnet, with different groups and communities onboarding onto the network over a period of time, leading up to Mainnet Liftoff.”
The Filecoin network allows users to buy and sell unused storage by using the native cryptocurrency – filecoin (FIL). So far, over 400 miners worldwide have onboarded more than 325 pebibytes (PiB) of storage capacity on the Filecoin network. This is “enough space for 90 million 1080p movies, 1,400 full copies of Wikipedia, or 7 times the entire written works of mankind (in all languages)” notes Filecoin. This is a milestone achievement from any trustless decentralized storage networks so far.
Protocol Labs, the developer of the Filecoin platform, also talked about Filecoin’s impressive growth. In the last two years, over 85 organizations have collaborated with the Filecoin network. This includes developer tooling, infrastructure, building applications and much more. Besides, many other storage networks have also onboarded the Filecoin network.
Filecoin: Getting Participants Acquainted at Pre-Liftoff Mainnet Stage
In the next few weeks, the Filecoin community will clients, miners, custodians, network services, to onboard the network. The pre-Liftoff phase i.e. The Ignition mainnet launch will give network participants enough time to “initialize, learn, set up their systems, and optimize their deployments”.
The blog post notes that the Mainnet Ignition launch will solidify several pathways for the Filecoin community. This includes engaging in network improvement and decision making. All the participation will happen through the open Filecoin Improvement Process.
“Filecoin is fully functional, but we expect the community to continue improving and evolving the Filecoin network with frequent software updates well beyond Mainnet Liftoff,” the blog post mentions.
