The partnership between Baidu and Blackberry will help car manufacturers to effectively and efficiently produce safe autonomous vehicles.
Blackberry Limited (NYSE: BB) has seen its 2018 partnership deal with Chinese search engine heavyweight Baidu Inc (NASDAQ: BIDU) expanded in a bid to provide enough tools for automakers to produce next-generation connected and autonomous vehicles in China.
The expansion of the deal will see the high definition map of Baidu launched on the QNX® Neutrino® Real-time Operating System (RTOS) of Blackberry. This is a real-time microkernel operating system that ensures that flexibility and deterministic performance are provided as a measure to make solutions available to the scarce resources of the embedded system.
This will be produced on a large scale in the upcoming GAC New Energy Aion models as part of the initial agreement to ensure that Blackberry QNX’s ISO 26262 ASIL D certified operating system (OS) becomes the backbone of the Apollo autonomous driving open platform.
According to Wang Yunpeng, Senior Director of the Technology Department of Baidu’s Intelligent Driving Group, the partnership between the two will help car manufacturers to effectively and efficiently produce safe autonomous vehicles. Blackberry’s QNX software will combine its performance in functional safety as well as network security and reliability with the experiences in artificial intelligence and deep learning of Baidu to promote and develop the intelligent networked automobile Industry, according to Yunpeng.

“We look forward to continuing to work closely with Baidu to help develop and deploy leading edge autonomous driving and connected vehicle technologies to meet the ever-increasing mission-critical and security requirements of the automotive industry, ” he said.
Baidu has over the years established itself as a high definition map vendor boasting of an Automotive SPICE® certification from TÜV Rheinland. Automakers spread across the world seeking to come out with a next-generation connected and the autonomous vehicle in China looks up to the Baidu high definition maps.
Baidu recently teamed up with Zhejiang Geely Holding Group (OTCMKTS: GELYF) to tap their specialty in vehicle designs and manufacturing to accelerate their vision in the industry. Baidu on the other hand is being expected to offer intelligent driving capabilities to take passenger vehicles to the next level.
Blackberry also ensures that intelligent security software and services are provided to enterprises and governments. They ensure that Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning are leveraged as they seek to provide long-lasting solutions related to cybersecurity and safety and data privacy solutions. Blackberry secures over 500 million endpoints including 175 million cars. Blackberry also announced a deal with Canoo Inc (NASDAQ: GOEV), an electric vehicle startup, that the Blackberry QNX operating system will power the ADAS system for the company’s membership-based semi-autonomous EVs.
