Meta to Start Using Generative AI Tools for Creating Ads before Year End

Meta intends to bring together its teams working on generative AI across the company into one group to build “delightful experiences around this technology” into all of its different products.

Meta Platforms Inc (NYSE: META) has shared its plans regarding the future progress in artificial intelligence (AI) development. As Meta has revealed, it will start employing its generative AI tools to create ads for companies before the end of this year. Advertising as a unit has long been generating good revenue for the company, however, now Meta intends to use AI for designing ads for companies that use its social media platforms to promote their brands.

Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth commented:

“We’ve been investing in artificial intelligence for over a decade, and have one of the leading research institutes in the world. We certainly have a large research organization, hundreds of people.”

He further added:

“We feel very confident that … we are at the very forefront. Quite a few of the techniques that are in large language model development were pioneered by our teams. I expect we’ll start seeing some of them [ommercialization of the tech this year. We just created a new team, the generative AI team, a couple of months ago; they are very busy. It’s probably the area that I’m spending the most time in, as well as Mark Zuckerberg and Chief Product Officer Chris Cox.”

How will it work? As Andrew Bosworth has explained, instead of a company using a single image in an advertising campaign, it can ask the AI to create images that target different audiences. Besides, enhancements such as adjusting brightness, aspect ratios, and text placement will be applied automatically. According to Bosworth, the technology is both time- and cost-effective. If earlier a lot of computer graphics and programming were required to create a 3D world, now it is very simple, all you need is to describe what you want to get in the end.

Meta Exploring AI

Meta started exploring the artificial intelligence back in 2013 when it established an AI research lab and invited Yann LeCun, a French scientist and leading expert on the technology to join the effort. So far, the company has implemented the technology in at least two cases. Firstly, Meta claims to be using AI applications to screen for and remove offensive material such as sexual and violent content. Secondly, Meta started using computer vision algorithms to track user movement in real-time for its Oculus product.

In February this year, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the creation of a new unit at Meta that would develop AI products for Instagram and WhatsApp, with a focus on generative artificial intelligence. Now, the announcement has a definite time frame, as we can expect AI ads before the end of 2023.

In the short-term perspective, Meta intends to bring together its teams working on generative AI across the company into one group to build “delightful experiences around this technology” into all of its different products.
