Rosie Perez is an icon.
On Thursday, she took time out of her day to appear at Governor Cuomo’s most recent press conference. She, alongside comedian Chris Rock, was encouraging New Yorkers to continue to wear their masks, even as the state begins its process of phased reopening.
While some critics demeaned this appearance, Perez is proof that New Yorkers value authenticity above all.
Rosie Perez is a True Brooklyn Voice
During Thursday’s press conference, Andrew Cuomo remarked that he needed “authentic Brooklyn voices” to share today’s message about getting tested and wearing a mask.
So, he brought out Rosie Perez—actress, comedian, and authentic Brooklyn B-Girl—and Chris Rock to spread the word.
Yes, some critics said Cuomo was “out of touch” for the move. Indeed, there was no shortage of more high-profile celebrities that he could have called upon to help him with the messaging. And these same critics have no problem “bigging up” washed-up stars like Scott Baio and Ted Nugent because they support Donald Trump.
But, in all reality, any high-profile celebrities would have fallen short at Cuomo’s presser today. Because New Yorkers, above all else, value authenticity over celebrity.
Spread Love—It’s The Brooklyn Way
The phrase “Spread Love—It’s The Brooklyn Way” has gone worldwide. And the outpouring of love online for Rosie Perez proves that “spreading love” is not just for the boroughs.
New York has endured unspeakable tragedy over recent years—9/11, Hurricane Sandy, watching Rudy Giuliani morph into Dr. Evil. Now, of course, we have the ongoing issue of COVID-19, and we have the most cases nationwide.
But through it all, there’s an interminable spirit and will to rise that keeps us afloat—and keeps us as one of the greatest cities, not just in the United States, but in the world.
What’s wrong with Rosie Perez coming through for a quick minute, after all?
