Sand worth billions of rupees is mined from the Yamuna river, considered holy in Hinduism, threatening its ecology. During the COVID-19 lockdown, legal and illegal mining continued in the Yamuna river on the Haryana-Uttar Pradesh border. The local pollution control board officials admitted that the mining in the Yamuna river continued to violate environmental norms.
Sand is a vital ingredient in the river. It is also unsustainably mined to satisfy the construction and infrastructure industry. Excessive mining changes the river’s course, aggravates floods, deprives organisms of habitats, affects farmers and fisherfolk, depletes groundwater level, and causes several other ecological hazards.
