20 December 2019 A blog by Simon McDougall, ICO’s Executive Director for Tech Policy and Innovation In June we issued our Adtech Update Report with a clear message to industry that they had six months to read, internalise and act upon our report. Our view from the outset was that this is an industry problem requiring an industry solution. We have just reached the end of that six month period and are reviewing our findings. During this time we’ve increased our understanding of the adtech industry. We’ve engaged widely with…

Bitcoin Cash Double Spend Statistics Invoke 0-Confirmation Debate

On November 28, the creator of doublespend.cash, a web portal that tracks and collects double spend attempts on the Bitcoin Cash network, explained that only 1 out of 1,105 double spends succeeds when they broadcast one second after the first transaction. The website’s creator highlighted that in most cases “only when submitted simultaneously, can a double spend succeed.” Also read: German Banks Authorized to Store and Sell Cryptocurrency in 2020 BCH Proponents Discuss Double Spends, Honoring the ‘First Seen,’ and Current Zero-Confirmation Security Bitcoin Cash (BCH) participants have always been…

Bitcoin Cash-Powered File Storage Concept Sparks Interest and Debate

Bitcoin Cash (BCH) proponents were introduced to a new project called the Cashweb protocol on Friday. The blockchain file sharing scheme allows people to store and load arbitrary data to the BCH chain. While the new protocol still has “a long way to go,” the developer decided to share his creation with the BCH community and show off the protocol’s possibilities. Even though a few people thought the project was “awesome,” the Cashweb conversation turned into a debate about whether or not data should be stored onchain in this manner.…

Spain Thwarts Bitcoin ATM Scam, Prompting Regulatory Debate Worldwide

Bitcoin ATMs are not currently governed by EU money laundering regulations, and arrests coordinated by Spanish police and Europol in May are bringing new focus to this loophole. A group of eight Spanish and Latin American individuals have been arrested, along with several of their associates, for using crypto ATMs to fund drug traffickers in Columbia. While large cryptocurrency exchanges worldwide are subject to increasing oversight and regulation, bitcoin ATMs often fall in legal gray areas, prompting debate amongst regulators and crypto users alike. Cornell Professor Reopens Scaling Debate With Bitcoin Critique

One of the known security vulnerabilities in cryptocurrency is the human being and his or her capacity for foolish acts. If a transaction hasn’t cleared at least once on any blockchain, including Bitcoin, it’s not secure. No Means No in Blockchain Confirmations On faster blockchains like Tron or EOS, you can wait even longer. The point isn’t always to be sure the transaction is legitimate. Sometimes it’s to be sure you received it on the right chain. Earlier this year, CCN reported on a string of bitcoin ATM robberies in…
