ProgPow Is Dead, Long Live ProgPow: Ethereum Developer Call Summary

The Ethereum (ETH) All Core Devs call to decide on the fate of ProgPow was held on March 6. Despite a tentative decision to reformulate the mining algorithm as “Ethash 2.0,” the call raised more questions than it answered. The call lasted approximately three hours, two of which were entirely dedicated to ProgPow. Several representatives of both the pro and anti-ProgPow sides were invited. Supporters included Kristy Leigh-Minehan, one of ProgPow’s creators, and BitsBeTrippin, the founder of an educational channel on mining. Anti-ProgPow representatives included Gnosis Co-founder Martin Köppelmann and…

The History of the Bitter Debate Over Ethereum’s ProgPoW

The Ethereum (ETH) community has recently been engaged in a bitter debate sparked by a proposed mining algorithm change. Dubbed ProgPoW, the proposal would invalidate all currently existing ASICs to only allow mining Ethereum with a GPU. While ProgPoW was born in 2018, it has seen alternate periods of stasis and active discussion during the two years of development. The latest round of debates was sparked by what, to some, seemed like a sudden reintroduction of ProgPoW into the Ethereum roadmap. During the Feb. 21 Dev call, Ethereum Improvement Proposal…

Ethereum Community Comes out Against Controversial ProgPoW

Opposition continues to grow against implementation of the controversial Programmatic Proof-of-Work (ProgPoW) proposal in the Ethereum community. ProgPoW is an ASIC-resistant PoW algorithm meant to replace ETHhash, the current hashing algorithm for the platform. First mooted two years ago, it suddenly reemerged as a concrete plan set for the middle of this year following a call of core developers on February 21. Leading stakeholders filed a petition on Github on Feb. 26 to register their disapproval with the decision. Authored by ETHBoston Organizer Justin Leroux, the petition claims the change…

Ethereum (ETH) Respond After Elon Musk Tweet, ProgPOW Has the Funding

Ethereum (ETH) add 2.8 percent ProgPOW funding secure, Berlin’s Least Authority to audit Ethereum Price Analysis Fundamentals Ethereum (ETH) is superior and an upgrade of Bitcoin. Its native currency in ETH can operate within an ecosystem, powering smart contracting as a settlement coin. Besides, considering the infinite number of possibilities that the platform opens up for visionaries, it is understandable that the community reacts the way it did to a single one-word tweet by Elon Musk, the brains behind Tesla and Space X. Ethereum — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) April 30,…

Funding for ProgPoW 3rd-Party Audit Approved

Ethereum (ETH) core developer Hudson Jameson announced that a third-party audit of the Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC)-resistant proof-of-work algorithm ProgPoW has been funded. The dev made the announcement during the latest bi-weekly Ethereum core developer meeting held on April 26. During the call, it was specified that the targeted funding amount of 50,000 units of decentralized, Ethereum-based USD-pegged stablecoin DAI had been reached. The funds were reportedly crowd-sourced through donations. Jameson noted that the audit is set to begin “this week or next week hopefully.” ASIC refers to mining…

Funding Approved for Audit of Ethereum’s ProgPoW Mining Proposal

Ethereum developers announced today that funding has been approved to audit the hotly-contested code change known as Progressive Proof-of-Work or ProgPoW. Since February, developers have been gathering the funds necessary to back a third-party audit of the ProgPoW code. Today, during a weekly meeting, it was announced that the targeted amount of 50,000 DAI (equivalent to roughly $50,000) has been fully met through crowd-sourced donations on open-source bounty platform Gitcoin, as well as other unnamed sources from the community. The aim of this audit, as stated by Ethereum Foundation community…

Ethereum Devs Once Again Approve ASIC-Resistant Algorithm ProgPoW

Ethereum (ETH) core devs once again discussed the proposed Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC)-resistant Proof of Work (PoW) algorithm ProgPoW during their weekly meeting on March 15. This week, the devs again reached an overall consensus that the algorithm should be implemented, while the timeline for its implementation remains unclear. When discussing the algorithm, the developers argued over how effective ProgPoW will prove to be at diminishing the efficiency advantage of ASICs. Ethereum core developer Greg Colvin noted that the team has discussed such doubts many times in the past.…

As ProgPoW Aimed at Stopping ASIC Mining Gets Supporting Votes, New Conspiracies and Debates Appear

Ethereum (ETH) network users have unanimously supported the ProgPoW algorithm, which is expected to make the platform resistant to application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) miners. Initially, opponents of the update prevailed over supporters by a margin of 96 percent, according to a Cointelegraph report on Feb. 15. The current scenario is exactly opposite, with 94 percent of voters favoring the implementation of ProgPoW, as evidenced by the Etherchain charts. What is ProgPoW? Simply put, ProgPoW is a version of the proof-of-work (PoW) algorithm, which is supposed to smooth the transition of…
